Teach us to Pray

Luke 11:1
And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

God has promised us that if we learn of Jesus we will find rest for our soul. His disciples are examples of men who chose to learn of him. They followed and watched him for three and a half years. They saw him do many miraculous things. They asked him many questions. Why? Because one of his gifts was the gift of teaching. He loved to teach. He is still teaching us today.
One of his disciples asked him to teach them to pray. Why? Because he heard and saw Jesus pray. But that was not his motivation. Some of the men that followed Jesus followed John the Baptist first. John taught his disciples to pray. Why? Because John's purpose was to prepare the way for Christ. He was to help set an atmosphere of prayer that would help people turn in the direction of the Lord.
You must understand that prayer changes the atmosphere by preparing a way for Christ to move in you. You must be able to pray in order to effectively change any atmosphere. John taught them to express themselves to God. He taught them to ask God to prepare their hearts to receive Christ. The atmosphere inside each person had to be prepared to receive Jesus Christ. So John taught his disciples to pray for Christ to come. Once John's mission was complete  the official mission of Christ could began.
The purpose of Jesus was to save people from their sins and connect them to God the Father and the Holy Spirit. He had a different purpose than John. A different purpose means a different prayer. Jesus had to prepare a people to receive God the Father inside them for the purpose of kingdom relationship. Jesus had to teach them how to prepare their hearts to receive God the Father just as John had prepared them to receive Jesus. To do this the heart had to be made ready.
The sign of a ready heart is that it will ask the right questions at the right time. It was at a certain time in a certain place that one of his disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray. He asked the question on behalf of all the disciples. No one had asked him this question before. Jesus knew their hearts were ready to seek the Father because  the right question was asked at the right time.
The first thing Jesus taught them was to claim God as their Father. God is the Father and we are his children. This is the nature of our relationship with God. He is our Father. His position is far above any earthly Father. Also Jesus made sure to teach them how they were to approach God the Father. They were to love, honor and respect him.
We all must do the same. Jesus made it clear to ask for God's kingdom to come. Jesus taught them to ask for God's will that was in heaven to be done in them and in the earth. They were taught to put God first before anything else they considered to be of important. Words like give us, forgive us, lead us and deliver us comes only after first giving honor and respect to God the Father. Then we could pray for things that pertain to life both spiritual and natural.
Towards the end of his prayer lesson to his disciples Jesus stressed to them that they were to always remember that the kingdom, power and glory belongs to God alone. It is he who determines what happens in all three of these realms. We are not to claim any of his kingdom, power or glory for ourselves.
Lastly Jesus taught his disciples to end the prayer with the word Amen. Amen means so be it, which was to declare the things prayed are already done. It signifies that you agree with and believe in the things prayed in the prayer.
The purpose of this blog today was to point out some of the key points of this model prayer that Jesus taught to his disciples. Because we are his disciples also, it is fare for us to allow the Holy Spirit to teach us how to use this prayer in our daily walk with God. So children of God, the next time you are in your prayer closet lift your hands and believe you are not in there alone. Believe that God hears and will act on your behalf. He will give you what you need to fulfill your purpose in the earth. Your prayers will change your atmosphere in Jesus name amen!
