Root

Isaiah 61:3
To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.

The basic meaning of the word ROOT is: a part from which other things grow and develop. It is the essential part of something. It is the base cause or source of something. When you think in terms of a natural plant the root is the part of the plant that grows downward into the ground to hold the plant in place. It also absorbs and stores what the plant needs to maintain or progress and grow.
For the most part the root is almost always hidden and unnoticed, but without the root there would be no plant. The same is true for those confessing to be children of God. Why? Because it is Jesus Christ who holds them in place and causes them to grow. It is because of his righteousness that we through him are able to be accepted and progress in the kingdom of God.
What is righteousness? Righteousness as it pertains to Christians means being in right relationship to God and his standards. Faith in Christ Jesus leads to righteousness which is the root or essential part of our relationship with God. When we put our trust in God that equals true faith. Faith in God causes us to think in ways that are different from our natural selfish way of thinking.
The selfishness in our nature is the root of every sin. Faith and righteousness in God cancels our selfish way of thinking and cancels sin. You can not obey God and sin at the same time. For us, our thinking patterns can be compared to the root system of a natural plant. Like the natural root of a plant will effect the whole plant, so does what we think effect our whole body including our behavior.
When we think God, we are in righteousness mode and we will behave righteously. When we think selfishly, we enter into sin mode and behave in ways opposite of Gods standards. God knows that we can't think righteously all the time without help. This is why he has given us the Holy Spirit to be with us always. He helps us to keep our mind on Jesus Christ the Son who in turn helps us keep our thoughts on God the Father.
This process of righteous thinking helps you overcome natural, sinful, ordinary thinking. In fact there is an acronym for root that kind of sums up all that has been mentioned in today's blog. The word ROOT stands for: Righteousness Overcomes Ordinary Thinking. If our roots be in Jesus Christ, then our thinking will be towards pleasing God the Father. How? By maintaining a right relationship with him by following the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Like the natural plant we will be rooted and grounded in place. But unlike the natural plant our ground is not of this earth. Our roots are directed towards a place in heaven. It is in the soil of heaven that our roots spread and cause us to grow here on earth. So children of God do your best to always think on things above and fix your thoughts on Jesus Christ. Be determined to learn of him and watch and see the glory of God transform your existence into a God filled life. Love you and keep moving forward in the name of Jesus!
